January 2012 is the CSD 30 Day Wellness Challenge!
Students, Parents, Community Members and Staff,
Please join us in a month filled with wellness events! Below is a summary of how each school is taking on the Challenge!
Colchester High School- At the beginning of second semester, all health classes will set the goal of spending 15 minutes each day doing a physical activity for one entire month. In addition, they’ll set one of two goals (drinking more water or eating more fruits/veggies). This 30 Day Challenge will target not only the health classes at CHS but will also encourage faculty and staff participation.
Colchester Middle School- will be kicking off the month with an onsite video of faculty and staff sharing the goals they plan on implementing in January. Throughout the month there will be “Daily Wellness Tips” announced over the intercom as well as a weekly stretch to be conducted by students and staff in each homeroom during morning announcements. During our weekly Teacher Advisories (TA’s), students and staff will meet for activities that support our weekly themes: mental health, physical health, social/emotional health and nutritional health. The last TA of the month will be a healthy breakfast celebration in each TA! For more information please contact, CMS- Ginger Epstein, [email protected].
Malletts Bay School- will post a 30 Day Wellness Challenge video on the MBS website the first week of January. The video includes encouraging messages from the principals and staff as well as different students about how to set a wellness goal! Wellness contracts will be sent home so students can set wellness goals! Families are encouraged to set wellness goals too! At the end of the month there will be a school wide celebration! For more information please contact, MBS- Tammy Frieberg, [email protected].
Porters Point School- is very excited about the 30 Day Challenge! Our school goal is to have school involvement with the choosing, preparing, and critiquing one snack a week. Our wonderful cooks are going to assist two second grade students prepare the snack each week. Two kindergarten students will announce the snack that is being prepared and a first grade class will tally and announce the results each week! Each class will develop individual goals for the month and will keep track of successes. The teachers have all agreed to have their own goal that they will share with their class. We are planning to celebrate the 30 Day successes, but also plan to try to continue the food preparation portion through April. For more information please contact, PPS- Dawn Bissionnette, [email protected] and Mary Axworthy, [email protected].
Union Memorial School- would like the staff and students to participate in a whole school bulletin board celebrating all of the healthy activities/choices we participate in, at home or at school. We would like to ask that each child and staff member bring in a photo of themselves participating in something which promotes health and wellness. Here are some ideas:
· Sporting activities (skating, skiing, soccer, etc)
· Leisure activities (hiking, biking, skateboarding, wii, etc.)
· Relaxing activities (reading, playing with friends / family, cuddling with a pet, listening to music, movie night with the family, etc.)
· Eating healthy (favorite foods, snacks, cooking, etc.)
The options are endless! It’s about taking time to take care of ourselves both physically and mentally.
As a school we always promote healthy snacks but especially during the month of January we would like to emphasize healthy eating. Individual classrooms will be having discussions regarding positive eating habits which promote not only nutritional benefits but boost brain power!
As always we thank you for supporting our schools! We hope your holiday is blessed with family and friends. For more information please contact, UMS- Darlene Mulcahy, [email protected] and Judy Lilley, [email protected].
